Salvia Belle de Loire

Salvia × jamensis ‘Belle de Loire’ (also labelled ‘Barsabel’) is a herbaceous perennial that grows upright to roughly 70cm. Its aromatic grey-green leaves are a good backdrop for the long flower spikes, two-tone orange and yellow, that appear from spring onwards. As temperatures drop in autumn, the flowers soften to creamy and salmon-pink shades.

Give it full sun or a little dappled shade, and reasonably fertile soil that holds some moisture but never gets waterlogged. It is hardy across most of the UK, though cold, soggy ground in winter can do it harm, so good drainage matters. Removing the faded spikes keeps the flowers coming, and bees love it.
