‘Blue Note’ is a small, bushy Salvia greggii that branches mostly from its base. The leaves are little, aromatic and slightly downy, in mid to deep green, and they stay put over winter unless frost cuts them down. From summer into autumn it sends up spikes of royal blue flowers, only stopping when the frosts arrive.
At roughly 50cm high and across, it’s a good size for pots, gravel beds, courtyards or tucked in at the foot of a sunny wall. It wants sun and a bit of shelter, with soil that drains freely and isn’t too rich. It is hardy over most of the UK and copes well with drought. Trim off spent spikes to keep it flowering longer.
