Salvia microphylla ‘Delice Gold and Wine’ is a shrubby, semi-evergreen sage with oval, dark green leaves. Its small flowers are two-toned – deep pink with a pale cream lip – and they keep appearing across spring and summer. It was raised in Belgium by the breeder Jan Debusschere and made the final shortlist for RHS Chelsea Plant of the Year in 2021. Bees adore it.
Find it a sheltered place in sun or part shade, in soil that drains well and isn’t overly rich. It will come through winter in most parts of the UK and handles dry weather once it has settled in. Trim off the spent flower stems to encourage more, and it’s as happy in a pot as in a border.
