Mahonia is a tough evergreen shrub with glossy, prickly, holly-like leaves. Sprays of sweetly scented yellow flowers appear between autumn and spring, a welcome treat for winter bees, followed by dark blue-black berries.
It copes well with shade and grows in most soils that aren’t waterlogged, which makes it a reliable choice for awkward corners.
