Salvia ‘Amistad’ is a tall, upright salvia reaching around 1.2–1.5m, with large deep purple flowers held in near-black calyces on dark stems. It was found in Argentina by Rolando Uría and holds the RHS Award of Garden Merit.
It prefers sun or light shade in a sheltered spot, ideally against a south- or west-facing wall, in fertile, well-drained soil that never sits wet. Its long season of nectar-rich flowers suits the back of a border, and bees, including long-tongued bumblebees, and butterflies visit them.
