Tanks of 3rd County of London Yeomanry parked on a residential street in anticipation of the imminent Normandy Invasion.
On the 3rd of June 1944, the Regiment received orders to proceed to a Marshalling Area some 8 miles to the North of Portsmouth. By 8.00 am the next day, they were lined up and on their way.
This was one of my first “Then and Now” photographs and looking back, it was much easier to line up than most others; primarily due to the number of chimneys that can still be seen on the house behind. In addition, Windsor Road is in my home town, so I had more time than usual.
The original photo, taken between February and June 1944, is from an album containing 210 photographs compiled by Major W H J Sale, MC, 3rd/4th County of London Yeomanry (Sharpshooters), 1944.
